Community Ministries
First Welcome
First Welcome began out of a concern for the homeless of Wichita, particularly the children. Sunday school classes
and other volunteers spend one day a month taking the elementary children
in the homeless shelters on special outings or for a special day at the
church. Every Wednesday, volunteers from FUMC pick up the preschool children
at the shelters and deliver them to the Downtown Day Care Center for a
special day of learning, play, warmth and love.
Home
Improvement Crew
Our home Improvement Crew is a program designed to extend Christ's love
to our elderly or widowed church members who may be homebound or on fixed
incomes and need a helping hand with home repairs. Volunteers in the congregation
donate their time- donations are accepted which in turn go toward missions.
In Town Work Teams
The Commission on Community Outreach and Social Concerns plans special days throughout the
school year when the congregation is given the opportunity for hand-on
missions in our city. It may be building a home, painting homes for
the elderly, working at Camp Horizon, participating in hunger walks, or
projects around the church. On one Saturday in April, Spring
Fling is held – bringing together hundreds of our members and sending them
over the city.
KIT – "Keeping in Touch"
Through this program, people who are homebound, in a nursing home or who
need visits, are matched with a "KIT" church member who will call on them.
We want people to know they are precious to us. The faith stories they
tell, the history they have lived in this church and their prayers for
us bless each visitor.
Prison Ministry
The Prison Ministry is a program developed to offer FUMC members a way
to the needs of incarcerated persons. Tutoring, daily prayers, hygiene
kits, answering letters, driving children to see their moms in prison –
these are a few ways one can be involved in this meaningful program.
MedShare
This was developed as a way to recycle and share good, used medical equipment.
Donations are welcome, and stored at the church, available for asking.
Religious Nurture Center
The Religious Nurture Center ministers spiritually and socially to developmentally
disabled persons, regardless of their age, race, denomination, ability,
or type of handicap. The Center is open Sunday mornings, Wednesday and
Thursday evenings
.
Springfling
Springfling is held on one Saturday in Spring. Hundreds of workers work at up to 30 different projects throughout the city.
