Character of a Methodist

“The Character of a Methodist” In our culture, the New Year offers a “re-do”, a chance to make resolutions, and tend to all those things we meant to do throughout the previous year. Usually our resolutions include things like losing weight, getting back to the gym and back into shape, going to church and reading the Bible or some other spiritual discipline. This January at First Church we will look at “The Character of a Methodist” by John Wesley and the five traits he names based on Jesus’ understanding of the greatest...

Breakfast for the Overflow Shelter

Throughout the month of January, First Church will be providing breakfast for the homeless at the Overflow Shelter. Depending upon the weather, 80-100 men stay at the Overflow Shelter each night. It is requested that each class sign up to provide breakfast items for one week during January. Individuals may also sign up for any time. Toilet Paper Drive

My favorite brand of tiles paper is on sale!  Great!  Throw a couple of packages in the shopping cart to have on hand. Need to hand a new roll? No problem, just grab one from the closet.  For most of us, having this important item in our life is not a big deal. But for many families in our community, toilet paper is one more worry in their constant financial struggle. “It is the number one request of clients after food,” said Anita, the Open Door Community Ministry warehouse manager. Each client household receives two rolls of...

Congratulations Confirmands

We are excited to welcome the newest professing members of First Church!  The Confirmation class  lead worship at Downtown Alive on November 12.  Six youth took vows of membership and made professions of faith! Confirmation is a journey of faith to learn more about God and the church in order to become an adult member of the church.  However, we believe that Confirmation is much more than just joining the church. Students met this fall to examine their relationship with God in a variety of ways. There time was spent exploring scripture and...

Agape Redeemed Church of All Nations

You are likely to see new faces in colorful East African attire in and around the Chapel on Sunday mornings as we welcome a new group of Christians to our building. The Agape Redeemed Church of All Nations (ARC) worships in the First Church Chapel at 11:30 a.m. each Sunday.  As most of the church members are refugees from Africa, the service is in both English and Swahili. Many in this group have escaped war and destruction in their homeland and now live and are employed in Wichita. Their pastor, Rosemary Njoroge, is an immigrant from...
